摘 要:This lecture will consider the philosophies that underpin today's salient research paradigms and shape the ways we understand social phenomena. We shall reflect on the ways in which these philosophies have been juxtaposed to each other and the dichotomies that have arisen. A critical examination of the validity of these dichotomies and of their impact on the field of social science research will be developed and the emergence of mixed methods as a pragmatic response will be considered. The lecture will problematise the search for a one-size-fits all approach to understanding humanity and society. Drawing on the work of Gorard and Cook (2007) and Hamersley (2007), the lecture will problematise the challenges and opportunities presented by methodological plurality with regard to the evaluation of research.
主讲人简介:Dr. MairinHennebry is Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Education of the University of Hong Kong. Her research interests are in language learning motivation, the intersect between citizenship and language and language teacher education. She is Associate Editor of System: An International Journal of Educational Technology and Applied Linguistics and joint editor of the Edinburgh University Press Textbooks in Applied Linguistics.

摘 要:In this lecture, Dr. XUESONG (ANDY) GAO shall reflect on the challenges that many emerging applied linguistics scholars experienced in submitting their works to international journals for publication. He shall also discuss how readers(reviewers) will respond to their submissions and how they should do their best to manage the reviewers. Dr. GAO will share the challenges and difficulties that journal editors often have in managing academic journals.
主讲人简介:Dr. XUESONG (ANDY) GAO is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education, the University of Hong Kong. His research interests are in the areas of learner autonomy, language policy and language teacher education. He is co-editor of System: An International Journal of Educational Technology and Applied Linguistics.
